Or, Is the use of the word \u2018Sikhni\u2019 a disgrace to Sikh women?<\/p>\n<p>In the &#8216;Sikh Reht Maryada&#8217;, the word &#8216;Sikhni&#8217; has been used (see the second point of the portion describing &#8216;Sadharan Path&#8217; and the first point of the portion &#8216;Anand sanskar&#8217;) for Sikh woman.<\/p>\n<p>In \u2018Rehtnaama Bhaayee Chaupa Singh\u2019, the word \u2018Sikhani\u2019 has been used for many times: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Guru kee Sikhani saadh-sangat vich maththa kajj bhaithhe\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Guru kee Sikhani suchet rahai\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In \u2018Param Sumaarag\u2019 (mostly known as \u2018Prem Sumaarag\u2019) the word \u2018Sikhani\u2019 has been used: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIk Sikh Gurmukh bhala us Sikhani noo paahul dey\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In \u2018Sau Saakhee\u2019, the word \u2018Sikhani\u2019 has been used for many-many times: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIk raat tang hoye kai Sikhani de kaheyaan Laahora Singh de ghar gya\u201d. (Saakhee 7).<\/p>\n<p>\u201ckhushee karai ghar Sikhani bhala dekhaavai chaav\u201d. (Saakhee 8).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEk momani ne Sikhani vas kar chhodee hai\u201d. OR \u201cMain Sikhani naa rahndee\u201d. OR \u201cTaan Sikhani aaye maththa tekiya\u201d. OR \u201cBachan keeta Sikhaniye, tera beta hovega ate satvein janam Guru ka Sikh Sangat Singh kee mahal bas kai udharaingee\u201d. (Saakhee 9).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEk ber Guru jee oochee thaurh baithhe the, sangat jurhee, barhee bheerh hoyee. Ik Sikhani aavai. Munh dhhaanpiya hooya ate murh jaavai\u201d. (Saakhee 34).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuru puchheya, \u2018Toon kis dee Sikhanee hain?\u201d AND \u201cGuru jee bole, \u2018Sikha! Sikhani teri hai?\u201dAND \u201cEh Sikhani see loyee\u201d. AND \u201cTaan Sikh Sikhani jaan kai ghar gaye\u201d. (Saakhee 35).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDalle da kabeela hovaingee, taan Sikhaan dee, Sikhaniyaan dee sewa karengee\u201d. (Saakhee 40).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSabh Sikhaniyaa chup kar raheeyaan\u201d. (Saakhee 43).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEk baar ek Sikhani aayee hazoor ate rovan lagee\u201d. (Saakhee 65).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBachan hooya, \u2018Modnee, Sikhani teree hoyegee\u201d. (Saakhee 83).<\/p>\n<p>In \u2018Bijai Mukt Granth\u2019, the word \u2018Sikhani\u2019 has been used for many times: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSikh te Sikhani donon asaada mantra parhanage\u201d. (Saakhee 5).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJo Sikhaniyaan Anand parh ke dharma ka vivaah karange, onah daa bhaag Guru ji pooran karange\u201d. (Saakhee 95).<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018Sikhani\u2019 has also been used in \u2018Panth Prakaash\u2019 written by Giyaani Giyaan Singh: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIk Sikhani ne gaanveyo sundra sadd sur naal\u201d. (Chapter 36).<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018Sikhani\u2019 has also been used in \u2018Gur Prataap Sooraj Granth\u2019 written by Bhaayee Santokh Singh: &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sikh Sikhani sees nivaavainh\u201d. (Stanza 17, Ain 2, Ansoo 26, page 6349).<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018Sikhani\u2019 has also been used to refer to Sikh\u2019s wife. See the Saakhee 35 of \u2018Sau Saakhee\u2019: &#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cGuru puchheya, \u2018Toon kis dee Sikhanee hain?\u201d (Guru asked, \u2018whose wife are you?\u2019) OR \u201cGuru jee bole, \u2018Sikha! Sikhani teri hai?\u201d (Guru ji said, \u2018O Sikh! Is this your wife?\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018Singhni\u2019 has also been used for Sikh woman. So, both the words, Sikhni and Singhni, have the same meaning.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018singhani\u2019 has not been used in \u2018Rehtnaama Bhaayee Nand Laal\u2019, \u2018Tankhaahnaama Bhaayee Nand Laal\u2019, \u2018Saakhee Reht kee (Bhaayee Nand Laal)\u2019, \u2018Rehtnaama Bhaayee Prahlaad Singh\u2019, \u2018Rehtnaama Bhaayee Dya Singh\u2019, \u2018Rehtnaama Bhaayee Chaupa Singh\u2019 etc.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u2018Singhni\u2019 has been used in \u2018Sikh Reht Maryada\u2019. (See the \u2018Ardaas\u2019 in \u2018Sikh Reht Maryada\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>If the word \u2018Sikhni\u2019 has widely been used in our religious texts\/scriptures, there is no reason to avoid this word in our present daily life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Amrit Pal Singh \u2018Amrit\u2019) Someone asked me, \u201cCan the word \u2018Sikhni\u2019 be used for a Sikh woman?
